The Donaueschingen Music Festival is the oldest and most tradition-rich festival for New Music in the world. Founded in 1921 under royal patronage, still today it stands for all new experimental forms of contemporary music and tonal art. Under the stewardship of Björn Gottstein the festival strives to extend its international and aesthetic ambit even further.
The festival program builds on the existing concert formats for large orchestral works as well as for smaller ensembles while new concert formats with unusual dramaturgy at unfamiliar locations are also planned. Without neglecting the key, score-bound repertoire works the aim is to also give a great deal of scope to young performers and young musicians. The festival is to further open up to electronic music and new genres that move between various art forms. Numerous commission pieces will also continue the tradition of composition promotion. Composition commissions will this year go to the likes of Chaya Czernowin, Bernhard Lang, Márton Illés, Andreas Dohmen, Oyvind Torvund and Thomas Meadowcroft. The Remix-Ensemble will be premiering Emmanuel Nunes’ early work Un calendrier révolu while the Ictus Ensemble will be presenting unusual work forms including a piece of work for ensemble, electronics and video by Martin Schüttler that resembles a social study. Bernhard Leitner will also set up a permanent sound installation at Armin-Köhler-Platz, named after the festival’s long-standing manager who died in 2014.
