Zeitenwende - Hommage à Pierre Boulez

Kunstfest Weimar

The motto of Weimar’s 2010 Art Festival is "Irrlichter" (Will o’ the Wisps) – after a piece for piano by Franz Liszt originally entitled Feux follets. A magic word and a profound motto. Musical "will o’ the wisps" will appear often enough in the 2010 program – such as in Schubert’s A "Winter Journey" and in contemporary treatments thereof. "Will o’ the wisps" will also light up in semi-staged music theater – in "Eight Songs for a Mad King" by Peter Maxwell Davies or in the famous Mad Scenes of the 19th century – from Lucia di Lammermoor through to Salome’s finale. A representative exhibition aims to make clear the links between art and insanity – a show is planned from the famous collections Prinzhorn, Gugging and "Art Brut" in Lausanne.
The artist-in-residence program is also to be continued: unlike last year, however, in 2010 "spiritual brothers" will not be featured – but instead two real siblings: prizewinning violinist Carolin Widmann and her brother Jörg Widmann, the exceptionally gifted clarinetist and composer. Their chamber music program will feature both contemporary and classical music, Schubert and Schumann as well as Alban Berg, Aribert Reimann and Béla Bartók. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation supports the live-electronic realization of the concert "Zeitenwende - Hommage à Pierre Boulez".
