Mouvements: Focus on Arnulf Herrmann

Since April 2014 Arnulf Herrmann, winner of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation’s Composer’s Prize, has been Professor of Composition at the Saar music academy Hochschule für Musik Saar. Until now none of Herrmann’s works for larger line-ups have been performed in the Saarland or in the neighboring Lorraine region and Luxembourg. This situation is now to be remedied by broadcasting corporation Saarländischer Rundfunk (SR) with two concerts to be performed by the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie and the Ensemble Modern. A panel discussion with the composer is also planned.

Supported by the EvS Music Foundation this project aims to give exposure to important contemporary ensemble and orchestra literature. Forming a single unit the three events allow the audience in this SaarLorLux region substantial insight into Herrmann’s work.

In addition to the orchestra compositions – which recently shifted into the foreground and whose latest result presented by the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie will be “Drei Gesänge am offenen Fenster” (Three Songs at the Open Window) – ensemble works now also occupy a key role in Arnulf Herrmann’s work. Key developments and compositional aspects are now emerging and unfolding within him for the first time. These are therefore especially suited to illuminating the different aspects of this composer’s work.

For the concerts in collaboration with Ensemble Modern four central pieces from their catalog of works from the last ten years have been selected: “Terzenseele” for ensemble, “Monströses Lied” for solo clarinet and small ensemble, “Fiktive Tänze/Erster Band” for large ensemble and “rondeau sauvage” for seven musicians – the last being a German premiere.
