V. International Young Composers Academy: New Horizons

Centre for New Music Initiatives, Moskau, Russland

Held annually since 2011 the International Young Composers’ Academy in Tchaikovsky City (Perm region) is unique as the first and only large-scale international composers’ workshop in the country. Tchaikovsky City is a great place for a composers’ academy. Privacy and tranquility away from the city noise and hustle and bustle and a wonderful landscape all help participants to fruitful, creative concentration. Named after the famous composer, the city sets musical creativity free. The academy is a creative laboratory for young composers and musicians from different Russian regions and abroad. From the applications a jury of musicians selects 29 composition students and 15 performers of any nationality. The students have the possibility to work for 17 days on a new composition under the guidance of well-known visiting professors of composition who hold one-to-one sessions and group seminars. For the first time now a European ensemble will also be participating in the academy: the Schallfeld Ensemble from Graz. The compositions will be studied by Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble (MCME) and the Schallfeld Ensemble and will be premiered in a series of final concerts on the last days of the academy in Tchaikovsky, Perm and Moscow. During the academy, which is supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, there will also be five concerts presenting the results of the class and work phases.
