"Der Maler spricht" - composition commissions issued to Motschmann

ensemble risonanze erranti, Munich, Germany

In its second project supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation Munich’s ensemble risonanze erranti will devote itself to contemporary music: at the focus of the concert at Munich’s Pinakothek der Moderne will be two current pieces by Wolfgang Rihm whose themes are both linked to the creative work of Max Beckmann: “Der Maler träumt” for baritone and ensemble and “Versuchung” for violoncello and ensemble. Given the overlap of the musical material the two works belong together and will be performed for the first time here in one concert. The fact that Beckmann’s pictures will be on display in physical proximity and that the audience will have the chance to experience Beckmann’s “Versuchung” in visual terms will give the evening special appeal. With the support of the EvS Music Foundation a composition commission has also been issued to the young Berlin composer Johannes Motschmann – whose works seem to mediate between the Anglo-American sphere and the German avant-garde. The concert will be complemented by two works of the classical modern age: Krenek’s “Instant remembered”, dedicated to the memory of Anton Webern, is one of his later great ensemble works where his virtuoso serial method of writing seems to have become almost second nature. The piece resonates with the voice of a master of music, full of tranquility and aplomb, lightly touching on memories of the modern age and looking forward to what lies ahead (audiotape recordings). In this way the ensemble risonanze erranti makes its own contribution to a revival of Krenek’s later works.
Boulez' “Dérive I”, a sensual study in sound with great appeal, concludes the program.

Premiere: April 25, 2012
Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich
