Koper International biennial of contemporary music

The Friends of Music Association, Koper, Slovenia

The contemporary music festival in Koper, a small coastal town in Slovenia, has been in existence since 2008 and is dedicated to world and Slovenian premieres. In this edition, Marco Stroppa has been invited as composer-in-residence – a figure who understands composition as musical research and serves "the discourse on thought and artistic thought itself". As a philosopher of sound, sound to him is an epistemological instrument; as a musical poet, he tells, in a sensual, tactile and dynamic way, of constantly changing sounds, the decoding of which remains the task of the listener at the sounds' emission. In addition to works by Stroppa, the program includes music by Jing Wang, Liza Lim, George Lewis and Marcin Stancyzk, as well as pieces by Slovenian composers such as Nina Šenk, Vinko Globokar and Uroš Rojko. The festival also offers masterclasses and discussion groups and is funded by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
