cresc… 2015

Deutsche Ensemble Akademie e.V., Frankfurt, Germany

Organized by the Ensemble Modern and Hessian Broadcasting, the modern music festival cresc… Biennale für Moderne Musik Frankfurt RheinMain is being held for the third time now as a forward-looking initiative bundling and promoting regional energies in the field of New Music in 2015. Alongside Frankfurt and Darmstadt, this year Wiesbaden will also feature as an event location. cresc… not only sees itself as a purely premiere-focused festival but also offers a balanced mix of significant, rare and new works. After Iannis Xenakis and Bernd Alois Zimmermann the composer in focus in 2015 is Helmut Lachenmann. Lachenmann will be celebrating his 80th birthday on the second day of the festival with a festival concert in Wiesbaden supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
To mark this occasion the Orchestra of Hessian Broadcasting will be playing Les Consolations while the Ensemble Modern will present not only the rarely heard Schwankungen am Rand but also the premiere of the work Air in a soloist ensemble formation. The idea to rewrite the percussion concert with altered instrumentation and a reduced soloist line-up encapsulates the wish to give the work lasting new accessibility as well as more frequent and broader playability in terms of line-up size and notation. Following on from the success of the ensemble version of Helmut Lachenmann’s Accanto (premiered in 2006, frequently played since then and now preferred by the composer) the premiere of the new version of Air will form a special highlight in the festival.
