Composition Commission issued to Martin Schüttler

Solistenensemble PHOENIX16, Berlin, Germany

The focus of the ensemble PHØNIX16’s Dead On Arrival concert series, which began in 2017, is contemporary vocal music for 10-21 voices from the 20th and 21st centuries. Revivals of complex works feature on the program, along with transcriptions and composition commissions. The series is explicitly dedicated to those works once premiered and never performed again that are “too difficult! too special!” or which can no longer be performed for large vocal ensemble due to their instrumentation.

The concert DER WALD is an interrogation of German Romanticism and the romanticisms handed down to us, in terms of their relevance to contemporary music and their impact on contemporary society. Martin Schüttler's Meuten (Imitat) (2014) already explores these phenomena, the social aspects of language and its possibility of manipulation. A new composition by Martin Schüttler, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, will be premiered at this concert evening.
