Fanfares for a new Beginning

Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, Germany

The measures to combat the pandemic also pose unanticipated challenges to large orchestras. Performing in a philharmonic is restricted by distancing rules until further notice and the date for opening philharmonic halls for a large subscription audience of up to 2100 attendees is still unsure.

These external restrictions have led Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne and its Chief Conductor François-Xavier Roth to develop the idea of the artistic project Fanfares for a New Beginning. The Gürzenich Orchestra has commissioned acclaimed composers to write 3-5-minute works for brass ensemble with optional percussion. The works will each be performed as part of the Gürzenich Orchestra’s philharmonic concerts – not only behind closed doors but also in the urban space thereby sending a signal. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is promoting the composition commissions issued, among others, to Milica Djordjevic, Francesco Filidei, Zeynep Gedizlioğlu, York Höller, Philipp Maintz, Philippe Manoury, Martin Matalon, Hector Parrà and Vito Zuraj.
