Notturno – Composition Commission issued to Rebecca Saunders

Ensemble Resonanz, Hamburg

For the 2010/2011 season Ensemble Resonanz will be entering into a special artistic partnership with the cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras. By 2012 a total of 6 programs will be presented in Hamburg and internationally in which Queyras performs as a soloist, artistic director and conductor of the ensemble combining New Music with a select older repertoire. The Notturno project aims for the partners to integrate a new work for cello and string ensemble by Rebecca Saunders into the repertoire and set a standard for the performance of Helmut Lachenmann’s Notturno (Musik für Julia) for cello and small orchestra to then present these in initial concerts in Hamburg, Amsterdam and Vienna. The program will be supplemented by two treatments of older works: Mozart’s Fantasy for Mechanical Organ KV 608 and Manuel Hidalgo’s treatment of Piano Bagatelles, Op. 126 by Beethoven.
