Composition Commission issued to Laura Bowler

Sound Festival, Banchory, Great Britain

distance is a multi-media piece of chamber music by Laura Bowler for live amplified soprano and a live streamed ensemble. The performances of the composition commissions facilitated by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation will feature Juliet Fraser and the Talea Ensemble and will be held in Aberdeen and London.

While distance is an artistic and practical response to climate change in its creation and performance, the composition also explores the emotional and spiritual effects of distance and isolation.

Composer Laura Bowler writes: “Originally conceived before the pandemic, the form of the work has become even more politically charged since the pandemic. With this in mind, the work will not only reflect on the impact of climate change and its relationship to musicians’ lifestyles, but also articulate the idea of distance in its many forms.”

Due to the current situation and associated regulations, there may be changes at short notice. For the latest information on the project please therefore check sound-scotland.co.uk
