Tanglewood Music Center – Festival of Contemporary Music

Boston Symphony Orchestra

At the invitation of James Levine, General Musical Director at the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the festival this year is to be directed by Pulitzer prizewinner Charles Wuorinen. The composer will be responsible for both selecting the program and inviting guest artists. At the focus of the 2011 festival funded by the EvS Music Foundation will be a piece by Wuorinen himself: a half-scenic, dramatic work based on texts by the American lyricist James Tate. The premiere will be conducted by James Levine. The five-day festival will feature a total of six concerts – in addition to Wuorinen’s work three orchestral and one chamber concert as well as a concert by the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra. The work of some 15 to 20 contemporary composers including Jo Kondo from Japan, George Flynn from the USA and Felipe Lara from Brazil will be presented at the festival.
