For 16 years now, the International Summer Academy for Contemporary Music has offered qualified young composers and performers the opportunity to familiarize themselves with contemporary chamber music and ensemble repertoire as well as with the principles of free improvisation techniques. The aim of the academy is to promote and spread contemporary music by means of comprehensive and high-level appreciation and by issuing composition commissions to young composers, supporting young European artists and fostering their intercultural encounters. Inclusion in the EU network “Ulysses” makes mutual exchange with other European academies possible. Every year an established ensemble for contemporary music, a renowned Composer-in-Residence, specialist lecturers, aspiring young composers and performers from Germany, France and other European countries meet to convey musical understanding in a daily concentrated work process, to work on compositions as well as premieres and to discuss overarching interdisciplinary themes. The Composer-in-Residence as well as a number of specialist lecturers will be on hand to supply educational and artistic support to the performing participants and budding composers so as to present a closing concert at the end of the Summer Academy. The 2018 Summer Academy Opus XXI to be held at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg from August 25 to September 1 will be extending a targeted invitation to students to attend this Europe’s only master’s course in contemporary music – on the one hand, to performers and composers from the European course CoPeCo, whose participants are registered at music academies in Stockholm, Tallin, Lyon and Hamburg and, on the other, to a selection of master’s students at the Internationale Ensemble Modern Akademie (IEMA) at Frankfurt am Main Music Academy. The musical focus in 2018 lies on the chamber music repertoire. Acting as Ensemble-in-Residence is Ensemble KNM from Berlin. The concluding concert will be held in the Rosananzraum venue on August 31 in cooperation with the Hamburg concert series HappyNewEars.
