Composition Commission issued to Stefan Litwin

Internationale Musikfestspiele Saar, Saarbrücken, Germany

The festival Musikfestspiele Saar has issued its first composition commission. Professor Stefan Litwin, a long-standing teacher of interpretation and performance practice at the local music academy Musikhochschule Saar, has composed Flegeljahre as a musical score to the full-length stage version of Jean Paul’s novel. Dramaturge Holger Schröder created a libretto from the literary original comprising its key narrative strands. The composition written especially with piano duo GrauSchumacher and the actor Ulrich Noethen in mind is to be premiered as part of Musikfestspiele Saar in 2020. Litwin’s expressive and rhythmically complex language of composition was developed by way of classical counterpoint, the Second Viennese School and Hanns Eisler’s “gestural composition”. With Flegeljahre the composer approaches Jean Paul’s multilayered world of language and thought, testing out a format in which music and language dovetail, supplement, overlay and reflect each other to form a poetic-musical narrative.
