CAMERATA BERN, Switzerland

One focus of the musical activities of CAMERATA BERN with its Artistic Director Patricia Kopatchinskaja is the promotion of contemporary composers and their work. For the 2019/2020 season, they have invited American composer Michael Hersch (*1971) to work with the ensemble and its Artistic Director. As part of the residency he will also be issued a composition commission care of CAMERATA BERN. Agatha for soprano, violin, clarinet and ensemble will be performed in two concerts by CAMERATA BERN at Casino Bern and at the Victoria Hall in Geneva. The soloists will be Patricia Kopatchinskaja, violin, Ah Young Hong, soprano and Reto Bieri, clarinet. Hersch is also curating another concert of CAMERATA BERN featuring, among other things, a performance of his violin concerto with Patricia Kopatchinskaja, which he wrote especially for her. In addition to the concerts, Michael Hersch will also give a guest lecture for students of composition at Bern University of the Arts and present his film On the Threshold of Winter at the Bern’s independent cinema Rex.

Born in Washington D.C. in 1971, Michael Hersch gained international recognition when he won the Concordia American Composer’s Prize at the age of 25. Recent performances and world premieres include his Violin Concerto at the Lucerne Festival and the Avanti Festival in Helsinki.
