Composition Commissions issued to Sofia Gubaidulina

Gewandhaus zu Leipzig, Germany

The "Alliance" between the Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, initiated by Andris Nelsons, is especially symbolic of the innovative revival of tradition: numerous historical links exist between these two top orchestras on either of the Atlantic, which Andris Nelsons heads as Music Director. Their close cooperation is new and unique on today's music scene and ranges from joint composition commissions to exchanges of musicians and mutual guest performances.

The BSO and Gewandhaus Orchestra have commissioned Sofia Gubaidulina to write new works for the "Alliance". Sofia Gubaidulina grew up in the Soviet Union and now lives near Hamburg. For the orchestras of Leipzig and Boston she is composing the Prolog für Orchester (Prologue for Orchestra) which will be premiered by the Gewandhaus Orchestra under the baton of Andris Nelsons. The work is a prelude to her other major recent orchestral work, Der Zorn Gottes (The Wrath of God), which will be performed in Leipzig at the end of her first season as Gewandhaus composer. The commission is funded by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
