Harmony of the Spheres: Six Composition Commissions

Slovene Philharmonic String Chamber Orchestra Association, Ljubljana, Slovenia

With Harmony of the Spheres composers are once again called upon to be inspired by a particular musical form: during a project lasting two years six Ljubljana Concertos will be written that are oriented to J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos. By including various solo instruments Bach extended the acoustic dimensions of the orchestra and redefined the concerto as a musical form.

Alongside composition commissions issued to Nina Šenk, Uroš Rojko, Davor Branimir Vincze, Daniel Moreira, Vito Žuraj and Marton Illes and supported by the EvS Music Foundation other concertos for stringed orchestra – for instance by Bach, Vivaldi or Telemann – will be performed. Furthermore, students from the Music Academy will compose six Ljubljana Concertinos that will also be premiered at the Harmony of the Spheres.

Two renowned Slovenian cultural institutions will be collaborating in this festival: the Chamber String Orchestra of the Slovenian Philharmonic and the National Gallery. Curators of the National Gallery and guests will hold lectures on different themes and thereby sound out parallels between music and fine art.
