Proximity: Enno Poppe and New Music

Ensemble Dal Niente, Chicago, USA

In Fall 2016, Ensemble Dal Niente will host Enno Poppe, one of Germany’s most influential composers, in the dual role of composer and conductor, culminating in a performance of his music alongside works by Michael Beil and Michael Pelzel. This project is supported by the EvS Music Foundation.

Poppe’s work invokes colorful, wild, and unexpected sound worlds that lead performers and audiences into exhilarating new musical territory. His compositions are built upon microtonal structures and algorithms, drawing upon the principles of mathematics and biology. Poppe is the winner of numerous prizes and has been commissioned by Europe’s finest contemporary ensembles and orchestras.

Collaborating with a figure of international stature such as Poppe creates an opportunity to elevate and expand the ensemble’s interpretation of contemporary European repertoire, while increasing its profile among American audiences.

Throughout a week-long residency with Dal Niente in November or December 2016, Poppe will work closely with the ensemble as guest composer and conductor, culminating in a public performance. Poppe’s visit to Chicago will create a unique opportunity for young musicians and composers to become intimately familiar with his compositional style and philosophy.

Throughout the residency, Dal Niente will partner with students at local music schools and conservatories. Students will be invited to interact directly with the composer through masterclasses, symposia, and informal discussions.
