Composition Commission issued to Peter Eötvös

Bavarian State Opera, Munich

With the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation the Bavarian State Opera issued a composition commission to Hungarian composer and conductor Peter Eötvös for a new opera entitled Die Tragödie des Teufels (The Tragedy of the Devil). In this three-part work Lucifer leads Adam and Eve through a world full of conflicts, misunderstandings and uncertainties – a world caught between play-acting, virtuality and science fiction. The libretto by the major German dramatist Albert Ostermeier brings the "Hungarian Faust", Imre Madách’s national drama The Tragedy of Man, right up to date for the 21st century. The comic-utopian opera was performed for the first time on February 22nd 2010 under the baton of the composer at the Munich’s Nationaltheater.

Monday, February 22nd 2010 (Premiere)
