School Ensemble for Contemporary Music

Ensemble intercontemporain, Paris, France

The Ensemble intercontemporain was founded in 1976 by Pierre Boulez and has since then been one of the world’s leading ensembles for contemporary music. In approx. 70 concerts worldwide per season the ensemble offers artistically outstanding interpretations of exemplary works of our age. To counter the lack of high-quality education programs for contemporary music in France the ensemble called an ambitious project into existence: 25 musically very gifted pupils from Paris’ Lycée Georges Brassens aged 15 to 18, i.e. on the threshold of their music studies, will undergo intensive mentoring for two school years by musicians from the Ensemble intercontemporain. They will have the opportunity to take part in the ensemble’s rehearsals and develop together with its members their own contemporary concert program featuring works by Stravinsky and Kagel to Varèse and Grisey. This will also include premiering of a work commissioned especially for this project which students will rehearse with the composer. The project will last two school years to give students enough time to find their way in a musical world new to them. The final concert will be held on April 10th 2012 in the concert hall of Paris’ Cité de la musique venue.
