Composition Commission issued to Minas Borboudakis

Greek composer Minas Borboudakis and the Sonar Quartet are the dominant “figures” at the 15th edition of the Neue Musik Bamberg festival. Borboudakis’ residency basically revolves around four aspects:
Borboudakis receives a composition commission for a roughly 15-minute string quartet to be premiered by the Sonar Quartet as part of a portrait concert. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is supporting the composition commission. The portrait concert on and also featuring Minas Borboudakis forms another focal point of the music festival. Between the individual works played by different performers Festival Director Markus Elsner will then talk to the composer. The concert entitled plugged features Borboudakis as a pianist. Together with Felix Dreher he will play his own works and those of various other composers for piano and electronics.
Another component of the festival already kicks off several weeks before the start of Neue Musik Bamberg: Munich composer Verena Marisa and Minas Borboudakis will hold a workshop for high school students on the use of electronic media in music – an aspect also becoming increasingly important in Borboudakis’ own work.
