Wien Modern 32: Growth

Vienna Modern, Austria

Founded in 1988 by Claudio Abbado the Wien Modern festival is the largest platform for contemporary music in Austria. For its 32nd edition, artists will dedicate themselves to the task of detaching the term "growth" from economic and political paralysis and reinterpreting it musically. More than 70 events will unite the most diverse generations and contexts of composers, venues, formats and ensembles. Playing a special role in the 2019 program will be both old and new explorations of the "opus magnum". Classics such as Dieter Schnebel's Sinfonie X or Luciano Berio's Sinfonia will feature here alongside completely new works: with premieres like Michael Hersch's trilogy sew me into a shroud of leaves spanning a total of 12 hours and Lera Auerbach's three-hour juxtaposition of angels and demons.
Orchestral projects in the Konzerthaus and Musikverein form part of the program alongside a composed walk, multimedia space experiments, composition competitions and cultural-political debates. For five weeks Vienna will become the center of contemporary art music offering a varied and up-to-date line-up of events featuring RSO Wien, Klangforum Wien, Arditti Quartett, Collegium Novum Zürich and SWR Experimental Studio.
