30th Anniversary of the Ensemble Modern – Composition Commissions issued to Anthony Cheung, David Fennessy and Vassos Nicolaou

Ensemble Modern, Frankfurt a. M.

In 2010 the Ensemble Modern (EM) celebrated it 30th birthday. Two concerts were to be held to mark this anniversary. The first concert was already held in March 2010 and the second in January 2011. With the support of the EvS Music Foundation composition commissions for ensemble have been issued, amongst others, to Anthony Cheung and David Fennessy as well as to Vassos Nicolaou for a work for solo bassoon and live electronics. Further commissions went to Miroslav Srnka, Johannes Schöllhorn and Wolfgang Rihm. The composers have a very close link with the EM – their collaboration often having begun at the International Ensemble Modern Academy. An example of such cooperation in the past includes Wolfgang Rihm’s Jagden und Formen, a masterpiece for the EM which has already been performed by the musicians over forty times.
