Young Composers' Academy Philharmonia Orchestra

Philharmonia Orchestra, London, UK

The Young Composers’ Academy is an annual scheme offering three young composers of exceptional talent the opportunity to write a new work to be performed by an ensemble from the London Philharmonia Orchestra. With mentorship and masterclasses, the Academy provides professional guidance throughout the composition process. The Academy forms part of the Orchestra’s “Music of Today” contemporary music series. Supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, the Academy is now being re-launched and developed under new Artistic Director Unsuk Chin, offering exceptional opportunities for young composers.

The selected young composers of the Academy receive not only a commission but also instrumental masterclasses, workshops, mentoring and tutorials with Philharmonia musicians and Unsuk Chin. The re-launch and development of the Young Composers’ Academy aims to create further opportunities for young composers and to tie the scheme further into the Philharmonia Orchestra’s work: The young composers will get the opportunity to write for larger ensembles and participate in expanded workshops. The Academy will also enlist the Philharmonia’s Principal Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen on an advisory basis. The participants will receive increased opportunities to learn from composers taking part in the main “Music of Today” concert series and to build association with the Ars Nova series of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.
