Miller Theatre Composer Portraits

Miller Theatre at Columbia University, New York City, USA

The Miller Theatre at Columbia University is one of New York City's leading contemporary music venues. Year after year, the Composer Portraits concert series treats audiences to full-length concerts by key composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. In 2019 and 2020, seven artists will be presenting their works, including several debut performances. The dialogue between composer and audience, which involves an ongoing creative process for both sides, takes on a special meaning at the Miller Theatre. The concert series opens with a portrait celebrating the work of composer and multi-instrumentalist Anthony Braxton. This artist has worked closely with the JACK Quartet and Either/Or who will be performing his composition. Vijay Iyer's portrait includes a debut performance and two New York premieres. Work from the last four decades by sound artist Annea Lockwood will be performed here alongside the compositions by the Chinese-American composer Bright Sheng. Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw, who is best known for her vocal music, will then present new works for string quartet and percussion. In February, violinist Courtney Orlando will be performing a concerto written for her by Oscar Bettison. The concert series concludes with a portrait of Dai Fujikura, presented by the International Contemporary Ensemble and soprano Alyce Tessier. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation will be funding the Miller Theatre Composer Portraits.
