Dann sind wir frei! Compositions from the Buchenwald Concentration Camp

Institute for Musicology Weimar-Jena, Franz Liszt University of Music Weimar, Germany

“Dann sind wir frei ...” aims to make compositions from Buchenwald Concentration Camp accessible, presenting them within their historical context and opening them up to a large audience. Discussing the individual works, the composers’ biographies, memoirs, colorful illustrations and the recording of the works paves a multi-dimensional path to accessing the music of Buchenwald.

In Buchenwald, some composers stand out for their particularly extensive oeuvre, including Ondřej Volráb and Józef Kropiński. The latter wrote around 500 compositions and arrangements during his imprisonment in Nazi concentration camps, of which at least 120 could be saved. But the works of lesser-known artists will now also be made accessible and heard for the first time. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is making the project possible.

Due to the current situation and associated regulations, there may be changes at short notice. For the latest information on the project please therefore check hfm-weimar.de/institut-fuer-musikwissenschaft-weimar-jena/willkommen/#HfM
