29th Zagreb Music Biennale

Croatian Composers’ Society – Zagreb Music Biennale, Zagreb, Croatia

Over 50 years have passed since the Zagreb Music Biennale was called into existence. Just as it does now, back then it served as a platform for contemporary Croatian music and as a mediator of the local and foreign music scene.

Unlike previous biennales that presented a theme-oriented program, the 29th edition of the Music Biennale, once again supported by the EvS Music Foundation, marks a change with a more open concept.

Over 100 works by international composers will be performed as part of over 30 events featuring performers from all parts of Europe and the world. Alongside long-standing partners like the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra and the Croatian Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra, in 2017 many other renowned performers will feature including Ensemble intercontemporain, Modern Oslo Sinfonietta, Les Percussions de Strasbourg and Ensemble Ictus.

After the great success of the 5-minute opera at the previous biennale this concept will be continued this year in the form of 5-minute piano concerts. In an attempt to also interest young listeners in contemporary music there will be child-focused events like a musical puppet show or special workshops. However, young performers are also to be given a platform too: for three of the four student ensembles appearing at the biennale this will be their first public appearance.
