30 Years Cikada

Foreningen Oslo Sinfonietta & Cikada, Oslo, Norway

In 2019, Cikada – the leading Norwegian ensemble for contemporary music – celebrates its 30th birthday with a series of concerts over the course of the year in its home-city, culminating in a long Cikada-Night as part of the Ultima Festival for contemporary music. As the Oslo-based ensemble doesn’t have an established concert series of its own, this special occasion is intended to bring together classic pieces from the ensemble’s repertoire along with numerous premieres to win new listeners. Six concerts with different instrumentations are planned with various personalities of the Oslo music-scene, thus displaying the breadth of the ensemble and its members within the context of Norway and Europe. On this occasion, works from Henrik Hellstenius and Asbjørn Schaathun, as well as from Mette Henriette Martedatter Rølvåg, Martin Hirsti Kvam and Clara Ianotta and – as part of the Ultima Festival in September 2019 – an evening-long premiere from Rolf Wallin will be performed. Additionally, works by Hans Abrahamsen, Carola Bauckholt, Klaus Lang, Maja S.K. Ratkje, Bent Sørensen, Rolf Wallin, and Agata Zubel are on the programme, as well as chamber works from Lars Petter Hagen, Manos Tsangaris and Kristine Tjøgersen. One evening is dedicated to Black Angel. Thirteen Images from the Dark Land by George Crumb (for electric string quartet, 1970) and Tetras (1983) by Iannis Xenakis. Project partners include the concert-series ‘Periferien‘ and ‘Krantz‘, the Ultima Festival, the Oslo Chamber Music Festival and the Norwegian Community for New Music ‘nyMusikk‘. A jubilee brochure accompanies the concert series and reflects both the activities of the ensemble during the last three decades as well as the ensemble’s current developments.
