Ein Tag im Maag/A Day at the Maag: Composition Commission issued to Wojtek Blecharz

Collegium Novum Zürich, Switzerland

In Fall 2017 Zürich will see the opening of the renovated Maag-Halle as a concert location. During the reconstruction of the Tonhalle this venue will serve as the home of the Tonhalle Orchestra. From then on Collegium Novum Zürich will also hold the majority of its Zürich concerts here. For instance, also as part of the festival Tage für Neue Musik 2017: a three-day event is planned making it possible to experience the new concert hall in different ways. Alongside works by Rebecca Saunders and Simon Steen-Andersen Collegium Novum will play a new work by the young Polish composer Wojtek Blecharz that is being funded by the EvS Music Foundation. Over the past few years Wojtek Blecharz has made a name for himself with works that always also have theatrical dimensions – and ones that perpetuate traditions marked by the instrumental theater of Dieter Schnebel and Mauricio Kagel or even Théâtre Musical, as developed by Georges Aperghis. What is striking about Blecharz' concepts is a sometimes quite ritualistic austerity in his works and an accompanying great expressive power that primarily targets the dark corners of human existence.
