Composition Commissions issued to Widmann, Mason, Sora

Munich Chamber Orchestra (MKO), Munich, Germany

Like in previous years, the MKO will also be issuing composition commissions in 2017. It has once again been possible to enlist Jörg Widmann for one of the commissions. The planned piece for vocal ensemble and string orchestra is the MKO’s first cooperation with the Leipzig vocal ensemble Amarcord. Christian Mason’s new work for string orchestra with a small wind line-up will be premiered under the baton of John Storgårds. Tom Sora is to receive the third composition commission for a string orchestra work with percussion that is to be premiered under the baton of Daniel Carter.

The commissioned works are to be performed as part of the subscription series and MKO Songbook series at the Schwere Reiter venue. The aim here is to extend the contemporary repertoire for string orchestra and to deepen the audience’s understanding of New Music. The three composition commissions are being supported by the EvS Music Foundation.
