Portrait Georg Friedrich Haas 2018

Fundação Casa da Música, Porto, Portugal

In 2018 Fundação Casa da Música will be introducing the Austrian composer Georg Friedrich Haas. In addition to public concerts, workshops will also be offered for musicians and singers to familiarize themselves with the special tonal world of Haas who will himself also be present. The aim is to be able to present high-quality music. For this reason, Casa da Música invited some well-known figures familiar with his work such as the conductors Peter Rundel, Baldur Brönnimann, Stefan Blunier and Brad Lubman and soloists like Hornroh Modern Alphorn Quartet and Miranda Cuckson. The works will be performed by ensembles such as Orquestra Sinfónica Casa da Música, Remix Ensemble and Coro Casa da Música.

Graz-born Georg Friedrich Haas is one of the most significant composers of our day. His musical language and handling of microtonality are a challenge for any performer of his works. Haas himself did not describe himself as a microtonalist. But rather as a composer who is free to choose the media required for his music. The fact that Georg Friedrich Haas’ music has only rarely been performed in Portugal is what drives Casa da Música on to present the composer’s works in this comprehensive retrospective.
