Composition Commission issued to Wolfgang Rihm “Concerto Arioso”

Kammerorchester Basel, Switzerland

In his over 50 years of creativity the composer Wolfgang Rihm born in Karlsruhe in 1952 has created a body of work now numbering over 380 published works. Today he is one of the most important composers of our time. In his works Rihm devotes himself to virtually all genres of instrumental and vocal music. A particular focus lies here on musical theater. To mark his 50th birthday numerous festivals and premieres were held in 2001/02 across Europe. Since 2016 Wolfgang Rihm has been in charge of overall artistic direction at the Lucerne Festival Academy. Wolfgang Rihm has a close relationship with Switzerland as an action and performance location. Institutions like the Lucerne Festival or the Paul Sacher Foundation as well as numerous composition commissions and acquaintances with representatives from the Swiss music and culture scene reflect the varied and multifaceted presence of the composer and his creative contribution to musical life here.

For Kammerorchester Basel it is therefore of great importance to commission and be able to perform a work by an artistic figure like Wolfgang Rihm with the support of the EvS Music Foundation. In turn, it is a matter of the heart for the composer to write a dedicated work for the cellist Sol Gabetta – with whom Kammerorchester Basel has had a long and successful collaboration. The premiere is planned to be hosted in Basel in January 2020.
