Yellow Barn’s Young Artists Program brings together 28 outstanding young instrumentalists and composers from across the US and abroad for a rigorous 18-day chamber music workshop that includes intensive study and 3 public performances. The rigorous daily schedule offers coaching sessions, private lessons, rehearsals, public performances, masterclasses, theory workshops, and time for practice. In 2016 the Yellow Barn Young Artists Program is supported by the EvS Music Foundation.
Since its founding in 1969, living composers have played an important role at Yellow Barn, both as faculty members and as visiting Composers-in-Residence. Composers-in-Residence live and work as members of the Yellow Barn community for one week out of the 5-week festival. Composers meet with musicians and audiences, interacting both formally in concerts and informally during rehearsals and special events like the annual Composer Portrait, an evening devoted to performing and exploring a single composer’s music.
Yellow Barn’s youngest composers in residence are the young composers who attend the Young Artists’ Program preceding the main festival each June. The program is equally competitive to the core Yellow Barn program, and audition standards are extremely high. Composers must submit three examples of recent work, preferably with recordings. Upon acceptance, each composer is assigned chamber groups to work with throughout the program. During their time at Yellow Barn, their works are developed, rehearsed, and performed in public. In this way, all Yellow Barn Young Artists have an in-depth look at the creative process, with guidance from a world-class faculty.
Participants are housed, share their meals, and have access to rehearsal and practice studios on Yellow Barn’s campus at the Greenwood School in Putney, Vermont.
