HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SIR GEORGE! – Composition Commission by the Mahler Chamber Orchestra

Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Berlin, Germany

To mark his 60th birthday in 2020 Sir George Benjamin and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra will be celebrating their successful artistic partnership with a composition commission. Together they will mark the premiere at the BBC Proms at London’s Royal Albert Hall and well as the Swiss and German premieres at the Lucerne Festival, Musikfest Berlin and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg.
The Mahler Chamber Orchestra and George Benjamin can look back on a close artistic partnership. George Benjamin wrote his first full-length opera Written on Skin especially for the orchestra. This was followed by acclaimed performances by the MCO at leading festivals and concert houses, at the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York and the Holland Festival, at London’s Barbican Centre, Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu, at Philharmonie Berlin and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg.
George Benjamin is now composing another piece for the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Here, once again, Benjamin’s lucid and highly expressive tonal structures will encounter the chamber music of the MCO and its democratic musical ethos.
