55th Opatija Music Panel – International Contemporary Music Festival

Cantus d.o.o., Zagreb, Croatia

Croatia’s seaside tourist town of Opatija, a very popular resort in the 19th century, is host to scarce few cultural events. Especially when it comes to New Music. However, once a year two buses roll up here full of artists, composers, musicologists, journalists and students from Zagreb and all over Europe. For four days they hold a very active and creative festival that invites the audience to take part in and explore something very new and unfamiliar.

The 55th edition of the festival also has lots in store: numerous concerts by renowned international ensembles specialized in contemporary music coming from Austria, Germany and Slovenia as well as concerts by the best Croatian artists from varied spheres of contemporary music. They present a program featuring works by Croatian and international composers. Also on the line-up are panel debates, artist discussions and lectures. At the focus of the festival are themes of particular relevance for the composers, such as recording and production, music publishing and author’s rights. Two panel discussions are hosted by Croatian music critic and philosopher Branimira Lazarin. For the second time now Opatija is also offering a masterclass on the topic of contemporary music concerts aimed at music students from Croatia. For this, members of the Ensemble Modern have been invited from Germany to work with the students during the festival. On the last day they will present their results in a concert.
