New Music Theatre by Jannik Giger and Leo Hofmann

Gare du Nord, Basel, Switzerland

Journalist Martin Bashir's BBC interview with Diana, Princess of Wales, is the last lengthy statement made by one of the most photographed women of her day. The iconic interview served as source material for the two media artists and composers Jannik Giger and Leo Hofmann to confront the complex relationships of media power and self-empowerment, public and private sphere, politics and emotion from a contemporary, media-critical and feminist perspective. On the basis of a libretto developed out of a collaboration between Benjamin von Bebber and feminist author Jude Ellision Sady Doyle, Giger and Hofmann have explored these themes in their piece of music theater "Queen of Hearts". In three acts they develop a multimedia sound space for a mixed instrumental ensemble, the exceptional soprano Sarah Maria Sun and an actor. Sun forms the center of the evening here, using her voice to create a cosmos that explores the unspoken, the associative echo chamber and contemporary context of the interview.
