Composition Commission issued to Jan Müller-Wieland

JUMBLE-Jugendensemble für Neue Musik Bayern c/o Tonkünstlerverband München e.V., München, Deutschland

The aim of the JUMBLE youth ensemble project initiated in 2015 at the initiative of the composers Alexander Strauch and Johannes X. Schachtner is to arouse the interest of up-and-coming musicians from Bavaria in New Music. It is primarily aimed at 14 to 23 year olds who have yet to study a main instrumental subject at a music academy and whose ability is comparable to that of the participants of the regional/national levels of the “Jugend musiziert” youth music competition.
Jumble is dedicated to already existing works and combines these with especially composed New Music. It is aimed at giving the young people access to suitable works from the existing repertoire over the course of various rehearsal phases. For 2016 a focus is planned on vocal music. For this it has been possible to enlist the acclaimed singer Salome Kammer. Together with the young people and the conductor Johannes X. Schachtner she will work on Luciano Berio’s folk songs: with familiar sounds but with contemporary instrumentation the young people will be introduced to the techniques of New Music.
Furthermore, with the support of the EvS Music Foundation, Jan Müller-Wieland will compose a new work that picks up on these elements. The composition of a new work for an ensemble of this kind is challenging both pedagogically and artistically: the “right tone” must be struck for the students with no limitation on artistic focus whilst not being too difficult. Exactly the right artist has been found here in the form of Jan Müller-Wieland.
