Composition Commissions issued to Chaya Czernowin, Christian Lolea and Gabriel Iranyi

Deutschlandradio, Cologne, Germany

In 2016 radio broadcaster Deutschlandradio’s new music forum FORUM NEUER MUSIK bears the motto “Jewish Identities” and focalizes Jewish self-image today – in its cultural plurality, across different generations and music-cultural scenes in Berlin, Tel Aviv, Bucharest and New York. Ten concerts, lectures and discussions explore questions of perspective, life choices as well as female biographies – mirrored in contemporary composition.
As part of this project Deutschlandfunk is issuing, with the support of the EvS Music Foundation, three composition commissions  to Chaya Czernowin, Christian Lolea and Gabriel Iranyi that will be premiered at the 2016 FORUM.
In different ways all three works explore people living in the diaspora: Czernowin completes her “Etudes in fragility” that focalize human breath. Berlin-based Iranyi uses the variety of organ registration in Cologne’s St Peter’s Church to explore Paul Celan’s reduction and concentration of lyrical language. Rumanian Lolea visualizes Bucharest’s Jewry that was for a long time tabooed.
The 2016 FORUM aims to draw a varied, lively picture arousing unprejudiced curiosity about Jewishness today – through the language of New Music.
