Composition Commission to Johannes Borowski

Philosophy and Art in Dialogue, Vienna, Austria

Much has already been written about Immanuel Kant's Critique of Judgment. Much is still to be said about it, both historically and systematically. And it is still worthwhile tackling this monumental work from many different angles. In particular, the interdisciplinary approach is to be taken into account here with a concert symposium at the interface of science and art. The lecture part aims to illuminate the aesthetics, natural philosophies and system conceptions of Reinhold, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, but also of the Romantics, such as Friedrich von Hardenberg (Novalis), Friedrich Schlegel or Friedrich Schleiermacher as well as lines of reception of the 19th and 20th century, such as Arthur Schopenhauer's, Friedrich Nietzsche's, Jean François Lyotard, Theodor W. Adorno or Alfred N. Whitehead, taking their cue here from Kant's Critique of Judgment.

This work has influenced numerous writers and inspired visual artists. It is remarkable that although sound art and composition translated some philosophy into sound, they took no notice of Kant. Therefore, the Konzert Symposium is keen to commission a first composition on Kant following on from the Critique of Judgment in the form of a composition commission issued to Johannes Boris Borowski. Regarding his work entitled Freies Spiel, Borowski says: "While composing, I will be accompanied by the reading of the Critique of Judgment, which in itself will have an impact. [...] In addition to exploring Kant's philosophy and conception of art, I also wish to draw inspiration from the specific language, flow, linguistic musicality and thought development in Kant's work."
