Composition Commission to Lawrence Dunn, Klaus Lang, and Alex Paxton

All three works by Lawrence Dunn, Klaus Lang, and Alex Paxton will be for Explore Ensemble's core sextet, and in Klaus Lang's case, his new work will also include an organ/harmonium part which the composer will perform himself, as a guest soloist alongside the ensemble.

Each piece has a certain vision:

Lawrence Dunn's new multi-movement work will augment the ensemble sextet by including a sampler keyboard part, which will feature Dunn's distinctive strange microtonal timbres that float between Sci-fi, nostalgia, and other intra-musical references, as for example in his works 'Set of Four' and 'We are all okay'.

Alex Paxton's work will push the sextet to the limits of virtuosity via jazz-tinged melodic textures and wild dramatic arcs, which typify much of Paxton's music, for example, where he often performs as an improvising trombonist with manic and inexorable energy.

Klaus Lang's new work will see the composer perform on organ/harmonium with the sextet. The new work will also explore spatial relationships, uniquely devised for each performance venue, and will offer a more meditative and contemplative experience for audiences.

The works will be premiered in different programmes as part of each venue partners’ programme, including recent works, as well as new works, the premieres of which have been delayed until 2022 due to the disruption of the pandemic.
