Composition Commission to Ondrej Adámek: Common Prayer

The City of Birmingham is home to people from all over the world. This major British metropolis boasts the world's largest group of people outside the sub-continent with a Bangladeshi and Pakistani heritage. Historically, it is the first city in the United Kingdom where non-Christian religious orientations predominated over traditional Western religions.

The Birmingham Contemporary Music Group wishes to create music reflecting this diverse community in its hometown. Ondrej Adámek is therefore embarking on a search for a common language of musical traditions for BCMG together with Neel Kamrul and Shigeko Hata. The composition commission Common Prayer brings the energy of the Qawwali chants of Sufi poetry into a "classical" concert format and is sponsored by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
