Composition Commission for a Piece of Musical Theater to Giorgio Battistelli

Deutsche Oper Berlin, Germany

In his sixth film, TEOREMA, made in 1968, as well as the novel of the same name published a year later, Pier Paolo Pasolini traces the portrait of a bourgeois family that can maintain its cohesion through no more than convention. The intrusion of a young stranger triggers the breakup of the family, whose members then separately try to live out their individuality – from the mother's sexual disinhibition and the son's artistic aspirations to the maid's religious transfiguration. Pasolini's material forms the basis for Giorgio Battistelli's new opera for large orchestra and six vocal parts. In June 2023, the composition, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, will be premiered at Deutsche Oper Berlin.
