Composition Commission to Thomas Adès

IMS Prussia Cove, London, UK

In 2022 IMS Prussia Cove is celebrating its 50th anniversary. In 1972, the Hungarian violinist Sándor Végh travelled to a remote stretch of coast on the southernmost tip of England. Inspired by this remote and beautiful place, he founded a masterclass seminar for young

musicians. 50 years later, IMS Prussia Cove continue his work, bringing some of the finest musicians in the world to the same remote stretch of coast in Cornwall to study, rehearse and perform together. Thomas Adès is among the illustrious alumni. One of the world’s foremost musicians, he is renowned as both a composer and a performer.

It is fitting, then, that Adès has been invited to create a new chamber work to celebrate IMS Prussia Cove’s anniversary. The commission will be written for septet (mezzo-soprano, piano, string quartet and double bass) and approximately 10-12 minutes in duration, setting the words of Hungarian poets to music to create an important new work within the chamber music repertoire. A personal tribute to the organisers,

the commission will be inspired by Adès’ time at IMS Prussia Cove, giving voice to a unique place and an enduring set of musical values.
MS Prussia Cove’s year of celebration will culminate with a 50th anniversary weekend hosted by the Wigmore Hall in London, showcasing the premiere of the new commission.
