A Festival for Experimental Music

Borealis, Bergen, Norway

Founded in 2004, Festival Borealis focuses on composition and improvisation, and in 2022 will present international and Norwegian premieres, family events, a residency and conversation program, and an online radio platform.

Gender equity and active representation of marginalized groups continue to distinguish the program in its 19th edition, made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. Premieres include Bent Sørensen's Harpsichord Concerto for Mahan Esfahani, Catherine Lamb's new work for microtonal brass ensemble, and Kristine Tjøgersen's new composition for soundinitiative with choreographer Julie Desprairies. The festival's year-long mentorship program culminates with a new generation of West Norwegian composers writing for the vocal ensemble Tabula Rasa - Mirsaeed Hosseiny Panah, Peder Niilas Taarnesvik, Astrid Solberg and Karoline Wallace.
